Sustainable Coccidiosis Management
Coccidiosis continues to be one of the major parasitic diseases of the intestinal tract of the animals. Coccidiosis in poultry is caused by the protozoan parasite of the genus Eimeria. Coccidiosis causes major economic losses through increased mortality & reduced growth. In order to control coccidiosis in poultry, coccidial vaccination, in drinking water & in feed supplementation of anti-coccidial products are commonly used. Long term use of these conventional chemical anticoccidial products have led to the development of resistant coccidial species. It is likely that in near future the conventional anticoccidial drugs will be banned. Again owing to their side effects and safety issues they are under scanner from the researchers. Thus there is an urgent need for alternative agents to control coccidiosis in poultry.
