Cineole-based Eucalyptus oil has antibacterial effects on pathogenic bacteria in the respiratory tract. Inhaled eucalyptus oil vapor is a decongestant & treatment for bronchitis. Cineole controls airway mucus hypersecretion & asthma via anti-inflammatory cytokine inhibition. Eucalyptus oil also stimulates immune system response by enhancing the phagocytic activity of monocyte-derived macrophages.
Peppermint oil contains mainly menthol which acts as a local anesthetic, disinfectant, decongestant, mucolytic & anti-inflammatory. Menthol effectively reduces inflammation of nasal catarrh.
Thyme oil contains mainly a natural biocide called Thymol, with strong antimicrobial attributes. Thymol can reduce bacterial resistance to common drugs such as penicillin. Numerous studies have demonstrated the antimicrobial effects of thymol, ranging from inducing antibiotic susceptibility in drug-resistant pathogens to powerful antioxidant properties. Research demonstrates that naturally occurring biocides such as thymol reduce bacterial resistance to antibiotics through a synergistic effect, and thymol has been shown to be an effective fungicide—especially against fluconazole-resistant strains.
This is especially relevant given that opportunistic Candida (fungus) infections can cause severe systemic infections in immunocompromised patients & current treatments are highly toxic, often result in drug-resistant Candida strains, & have low efficacy. Thymol also has a strong antimutagenic effect. Though the exact mechanism is unknown, there is evidence to suggest that thymol possesses at least some of its biocidal properties via membrane disruption.
Basil oil contains Methyl chavicol that has strong antibacterial action, psychedelic effects & reduces respiratory problems.
